Citation:
Speaking of the impending tour, we have yet another exciting announcement:

We are going to record every night of the Happiness is the Road Tour in a Front
Row Club-style off-the-mixing-desk stereo recording. Anyone will then be able to
purchase a download album of the show THE NEXT DAY direct from our Racket
Records Downloads store.

In addition to this, we will have a special bonus for the London Forum show on
19 November - our friends at Live Here Now will be bringing their multi-track
recording and duplication facilities to the show, which means that you will be
able to purchase a double CD of the show ON THE NIGHT and walk away with a
professionally mixed live album of the gig you've just seen.

This limited edition live album will only have 1000 physical copies made,
available at the usual Racket Records double-album price of ?13. Any copies not
sold on the night will be returned to the Racket Club for sale on the website
while supplies last.

More details on the whole 'Happiness On The Road' experiment will appear on the
website within the next week...

Dreamy Street
This Train Is My Life
Nothing Fills The Hole
Woke Up
Essence
The Other Half
Fantastic Place
Man From Planet Marzipan
Out of this World
Mad
The Great Escape
Afraid of Sunlight
Asylum Satellite #1
The Invisible Man
----------
Whatever Is Wrong With You
Neverland
----------

Happiness Is The Road

Citation:
Hello everyone,

First, let us start with a belated "Happy New Year!"; we hope that 2009 is a good year for all of you!

We have some exciting news! Following on from our experiment to release our new album "Happiness Is The Road" through the internet only, we're happy to announce that we have been approached by EMI to consider a CD release to retail. We're delighted, as this means that as many people as possible will have access to what most people agree is a wonderful album.

"Happiness Is The Road" will be released as a double-album into retail shops in the UK, Holland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Scandinavia on February 2nd, 2009. It will be on our own "Intact" label through EMI.

That's the end of the good news really, but if you're a little confused as to how this came about (and who could blame you?!), read on..

"We're so "cutting edge" we cut our sales!"
Our internet-only release-strategy to date has been an attempt to answer the long-standing question: "Would ALL our fans be prepared to buy the new work directly from us if there was no alternative?" This question could only be answered by going ahead and biting the bullet, so we bit it! And now we know.. It turned out to be about one-third of you. We'd like to say many, many thanks to those of you who came directly to us - you have literally made the continuation of the band, and its music, possible.

We have been able (through our internet-only campaign since November 2008) to maximize the number of people who might be prepared to buy directly from us at Racket Records on www.marillion.com. In this way we received 100% of the profit available from this project (many more times the profit we earn from retail shop sales). This will keep the band alive-and-well going forward and will finance us through the creative period ahead.

However, we received many, many emails and messages from fans who preferred not to buy on-line, lamenting the fact that they could not simply walk into a record shop and buy our new CD. We are, by now, aware (even sure!) that this view is held by a significant proportion of our overall fan base. So this year's "new" relationship with our long-standing allies at EMI will provide the machine required to put "Happiness Is The Road" into record stores across Europe and those of you who prefer not to buy on-line will have "high street" access to it. At this stage in the life of the album we think that's great news!

From our point of view, what's important is that our music is heard by as many people as possible whilst, at the same time, providing us with enough income to continue together. Direct sales have provided the income. The retail release will now complete the picture.

"But hang on a minute!" we hear you say.. "Aren't Marillion THE "Internet Pioneers?"
Well, that's what they like to call us these days.. But if we have learned anything from the last 15 years of using the Internet, it's to listen to our fans when they communicate with us - and loads of you are telling us that you simply want to go into your local shop and buy our new CD. Not a download, not from iTunes, and not from Amazon.

So there you have it, folks. We hope this helps! Have a great year 'til we see you again. (It might not be too long.. See www.marillion.com/tour!)

All the best,

H, Ian, Mark, Pete, and Steve

Hello from a buzzing Racket Club studio

We thought we would take this opportunity to give you news on our acoustic project as it has been unfolding over the past 2 weeks.

The early stages of this process have seen us stripping back some of our favourite Marillion songs - old and new - to their bare bones, and rearranging them from the ground-up using, where possible, only acoustic instruments.

Pete has been playing Balalaika, Xylophone and Glockenspiel as well as bass: Mark has been discovering autoharp in addition to his piano, organ and harmonium; Steve has been exploring the delights of mandolin and Portuguese guitar along with 6 and 12 string acoustic whilst Ian has been playing a few African drums in addition to drum kit and skulls. h has been hammering on his dulcimer and "Dulcitone" - a sort of keyboard instrument involving struck tuning forks - in addition to vocal and percussion.

All in all it's been an exciting time spent roughly sketching what's possible with this new palette of sounds. Next week we'll get down to the serious business of fine-tuning the musical arrangements and starting recording.
We're sure we'll have something really special for you in the Autumn.

Some of you seem a bit confused by what we are planning, so we thought we'd give you some feedback..
The first thing to emphasize is that this is a full-band Marillion studio recording. This will comprise - for the most part - new and radical versions of our previously recorded work. Not remixes - completely new performances. We'll limit ourselves to the acoustic format, although it's likely that Steve R will avail himself of electric guitar for the solos.

The staff at the Racket Club have been occasionally wandering through the studio area as we're working and the reaction has been unanimously positive so we are confident that Less can indeed be More!

The plan is to record the album in the studio over the Summer and the finished project should be with you some time in the early Autumn 2009.
From the end of July we are planning weekly videos to show us in action in the studio and to give you the chance to get a glimpse of the music ahead of its release.
We will then be supporting the album with the 'Less Is More' Tour later in the year - something the five of us are really looking forward to. The tour will give us the opportunity to do something totally different on stage and play songs from the L=M album plus loads of other tracks which already lend themselves to an acoustic arrangement.

Thanks as ever for your continuing support, We'll send you more news as it breaks!

h, Ian, Mark, Pete, Steve
